Reiki (pronounced ray-key) means 'universal life force energy'. It is a non-invasive natural healing therapy which helps to balance the human energy system and assist the body in repairing itself. It is simple, natural and extremely effective in helping maintain health and prevent illnesses by strengthening the immune system, and creating feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.
There are many theories about the history of Reiki, but the only documentary evidence we have is from the writings and teachings of Dr Mikao Usui in the easly 1900’s. Our knowledge of the history of Reiki is therefore limited to these, and to the knowledge handed down from Dr Usui to his students.
Dr Usui practiced Reiki from his clinic in Tokyo, and held workshops and classes to spread Reiki knowledge. His fame spread throughout Japan, and he was invited to many parts of Japan to give healing. Dr Usui integrated Reiki into the way of living, introducing the Reiki ideals. The ultimate purpose being to understand the ancient secret method of gaining happiness - Reiki, the Art of Inviting Happiness. Today, Reiki is practiced by many millions of people around the world.
Reiki can
·reduce stress and promote relaxation ·increase our sense of wellbeing ·energise and invigorate ·bring peace and clarity to life issues ·relieve insomnia ·improve effectiveness of medication and reduce side effects ·bring relief from aches, pains and illness
In many countries, including Australia, Reiki is currently being provided in hospitals, sports therapy, nursing homes, palliative care hospices and community service settings.
The effectiveness of Reiki lies in its capacity to bring about balance and maximize the body’s natural ability to heal itself. If we are feeling tense or just ‘need a break’, Reiki can assist in shutting down stress responses, so the body can take refuge in silence. Due to its gentle nature, many people fall asleep and awake feeling remarkably refreshed. Some experience relief immediately; others find that within a week or two their symptoms have diminished or disappeared.
Because Reiki is known to help balance the various systems of the body, the hormonal level of the body can be affected as well. It has been observed that, over a period of time, Reiki has normalized menstrual cycles, reduced cramping, helped with fertility issues, IVF processes and migraines, and lessened the frequency and intensity of ‘hot flushes’ and anxiety during menopause. Reiki is also wonderfully relaxing and calming during pregnancy and childbirth.
Reiki treatments are soothing, peaceful and bring about deep relaxation. The client lies fully clothed on a padded table in a warm, comfortable room, surrounded by gentle music and the subtle calming perfume of essential oils. The treatment follows a traditional pattern of hand positions, resting without pressure on or above the body.
Reiki sessions usually last about 60 minutes but can be tailored to suit the client. For stress reduction one to three sessions are satisfactory; however, for chronic conditions long-term treatment may be recommended. Many people enjoy the balancing and calming effect that Reiki brings to their lives and schedule regular monthly treatments. Reiki benefits everyone, including children. I invite you to discover how this gentle art can become part of your healthy way of life.

Important information you need to know before chosing a Reiki teacher
Reiki lineage
Reiki lineage refers to the line of Reiki Masters that leads to the student. For traditional Reiki the line begins with Dr Usui, and continues with one of his Reiki Masters, and then to one of theirs and so it continues. For a healing system to be called Reiki and be recognized as such, the lineage must trace back to Mikao Usui.
